The Brooklyn Dodgers got the nickname "Dem Bums" from a sports cartoonist named Willard Mullin who created a character known as The Brooklyn Bum, which was a caricature of the famous circus clown Emmett Kelly.
This wasn't mean-spirited name calling, but actually a term of affection that became popular with the Brooklyn Dodgers fans in the 1930's.
For the Brooklyn Dodgers and their fans though, 1955 was a special season. The Dodgers had made won pennants and made it to the World Series several times since 1941, but lost every time to the New York Yankees. In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers would meet the New York Yankees again in the World Series, and this time they would win it in a full seven game series. The star of the 1955 World Series was Johnny Podres, who won two games including the championship-deciding seventh game.
The 2005 Topps Dem Bums set is a great commemorative made in the style of the original 1955 Topps baseball cards. The set features 21 of the stars from the Brooklyn Dodgers 1955 team.
The set was distributed in packs of 2005 Topps baseball cards at an average rate of 1 in every 12 packs.
Some players were also featured on randomly inserted autographed cards that were found on average of 1:150 series 1 packs, and 1:185 series 2 packs.
A very rare find is a Chrome version of the 2005 Topps Dem Bums cards, it is believed that only 50 of each card exists, but they are not serial numbered.
1/1 cut signature cards were also inserted into 2005 Topps packs.
